There are a few little tricks that you can use to help get your pages listed in the search engines. Before you publish an article think long and hard about what words you want people to use in their searches. Try to get some of these words in the Title of the page, the URL of the page and in the Tag meta tags. Google doesn't use the Tag metatags anymore but other search engines still so. Try to get the keywords in the description tag as well, this is the short snippet that comes up on search engine results.
Now a word of warning, make sure that these keywords are relevant for your content and that they are in fact in the main page content as well otherwise you may be guilty of keyword stuffing, and you can face a penalty for that. But simply put the words that you choose should be relevant to the content and the things that the readers will be looking for. There is no reason to use 'spaghetti' in a sex toy review for instance but 'sex toy' would be excellent.
Your content should have a good title that grabs your readers interest and your first paragraph should grab and hold the reader's attention. It should make them want to read the rest of the article as you have wet their taste buds.
Use quality images to brighten up your article and make sure to fill in its 'alt tag'. This is very important as it's a factor in search engine listings and readers with sight disabilities use readers and it is this alt tag that is used as a description of the image for someone with sight problems.
Cross link your articles, if you have another article that could clarify something or is a recommendation then link to it from within your article, this can also help search engines rank your pages, but more importantly, it's helpful to your readers.
Try not to use weird and flashy fonts, these take time to download and can be difficult to read, so keep it simple.
Proof read your articles for both grammar and also spelling and there are some great online sites that can automate this process for you. For spelling check out ReSpelt.
To summarise then, focus on good quality articles and not things that are just thrown together. Good quality articles will get themselves listed through their own merit without having to pay for advertising.
